Tenaska is actively engaged in the development of a carbon capture and storage (CCS) project aimed at meeting the needs of emissions customers in Ohio, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania. The project's proposed framework involves the capture and transportation of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from various facilities to secure underground storage locations within the Tri-State area.

The Tri-State CCS Redbud project is specifically focused on West Virginia, with the company exploring potential underground storage sites in Hancock, Brooke, and Marshall counties. In anticipation of this project, Tenaska plans to drill seven CO2 injection wells/sites in West Virginia to facilitate the underground storage component. The Tri-State CCS Hub envisions the development of several CO2 injection wells with the capability of storing over 50-million metric tonnes (MMt) with injection taking place over 30 years.

Nine separate emitters reporting more than 20 million metric tonnes per year (MMt/y) of aggregate CO2 emissions have indicated their support for this project. These sources include AEP Dresden (1.9 MMt/y), AEP Mountaineer (9.2 MMt/y), Carroll County Energy (2.0 MMt/y), Ergon West Virginia (0.2 MMt/y), Hill Top Energy Center (1.5 MMt/y), Lakeview Energy (0.16 MMt/y), LS Power – Springdale (2.0 MMt/y), Southfield Energy (3.0 MMt/y), and Westmoreland Energy (2.8 MMt/y).
