Tri-State CO2 Storage Hub; Tri-State Project

The Southern States Energy Board, headquartered in Peachtree Corner, Georgia, is planning to conduct a comprehensive characterization of four stacked geologic reservoir and caprock carbon storage systems in the West Virginia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania region. The primary objective is to assess their suitability for CO2 storage and evaluate the competence of the caprock. Despite having a substantial customer base—comprising 131 industrial facilities within a 50-mile radius of the proposed project site, reporting nearly 47 million metric tons of CO2 emissions annually—the region currently lacks viable CO2 storage solutions. Thus, this initiative aims to establish the Tri-State Carbon Capture and Storage Hub to facilitate the decarbonization of the region.
