Carbon TerraVault 1 LLC (CTV) proposes to construct and operate four CO2 geologic sequestration wells at the Elk Hills Oil Field (EHOF) 26R reservoir located in Kern County, California.

CTV forecasts the potential CO2 stored in the 26R Monterey Formation reservoir up to 1.46 million tonnes annually for 26 years with injection starting in 2025. The anthropogenic CO2 will be sourced from either the Elk Hills 550 MW natural gas combined cycle power plant, renewable diesel refineries, and/or other sources in the EHOF area.

On June 17, 2024 CTV sent a letter to the EPA notifying them that Lone Cypress is reassessing the project and withdrew its Conditional Use Permit application from Kern County, CA. CTV’s letter also notes that there is not a commercial agreement in place between CTV and Avnos Direct Air Capture Facility and CTV does not expect to source carbon dioxide from Avnos in the short-term.

In response the EPA revised the draft permits and the Fact Sheet to remove all references to two of the previously proposed carbon dioxide sources: Avnos Direct Air Capture Facility and Lone Cypress, a proposed hydrogen plant.
