The Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) initiative at the Bridgeport Ethanol Plant aims to capture and store 95 percent of the carbon dioxide emissions produced annually during the fermentation process. The plant utilizes fermented corn to manufacture ethanol, a renewable fuel used to oxygenate gasoline and mitigate air pollution. The captured CO₂ will be conveyed via an underground pipeline to a permanent geologic storage site. Carbon America is responsible for financing, constructing, owning, and operating the CCS system, which will include advanced seismic, air, and water monitoring technologies to oversee the storage site located over 4,000 feet underground.
