TransAlta Sundance Carbon Capture

Cancelled Capture

Pro See the progress bar with key dates.

Sundance, a coal-fired power plant with six generating units commissioned between 1970 and 1980, is located 70 kilometers west of Edmonton, Alberta. TransAlta, a leader in clean electricity, is actively working on converting the fuel source for three of the Sundance units from coal to natural gas, aiming to provide clean, reliable, and affordable electricity for Albertans. Units 1, 2, and 3 have been permanently retired, while Unit 6 was fully converted to natural gas on February 1, 2021.

Following the cancellation of Project Pioneer in 2012, TransAlta is now reconsidering the life extension of existing coal-burning plants by exploring the possibility of retrofitting carbon capture technology. This potential move is prompted by the renewed interest in carbon capture as investments in fracking begin to plateau. The increasing focus on carbon capture aligns with the potential for enhanced oil recovery (CO2-EOR), providing justification for investing in CO2 capture technologies at the Sundance plant.
