FutureGen, a Carbon Dioxide Capture and Storage Project, was a collaboration involving the FutureGen Alliance, the US Department of Energy, the State of Illinois, Ameren Energy Resources, Babcock & Wilcox, and American Air Liquide. The project was located at Unit 4 of Ameren's power plant in Meredosia, Illinois, USA, and aimed to retrofit a 200 MW (1.1 Mt/yr) coal-based facility using oxy-combustion technology with 98% capture efficiency.

The captured CO2, totaling 1.1 million tons annually, was planned to be transported via a 30-mile onshore pipeline to deep saline aquifers near Jacksonville in Morgan County, IL, at a depth of approximately 4,000 feet. The total cost of the project was estimated to be $1.65 billion.

The project received Class VI permits in September 2014, and construction began in the same month. However, the project faced challenges and was officially canceled in 2016. This decision followed the withdrawal of DOE financing in 2015 due to a deadline under the 2009 federal stimulus package. The DOE had initially pledged $1 billion for the $1.65 billion initiative.

The FutureGen project aimed to demonstrate oxy-combustion technology, with the potential to capture 90% of CO2 emissions and eliminate most SOx, NOx, mercury, and particulate emissions. The project encountered regulatory, financial, and location-related hurdles, leading to its eventual cancellation.
