The Brown Pelican CO2 Sequestration Project (BRP Project or Project) is part of the Oxy Low Carbon Ventures, LLC (OLCV), whose objective is to demonstrate technical feasibility of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) utilizing CO2 from Direct Air Capture (DAC).
The CO2 will be injected into the Lower San Andres Formation at a proposed rate of 0.385 Million Metric Tons per Annum (MMTPA) for approximately two years followed by CO2 injection at a rate of 0.77 MMTPA for an additional 10 years. A total of 8.5 Million Metric Tons (MMT) is estimated to be stored during the injection period.
Carbon dioxide will be captured at the Stratos direct air capture (DAC) facility that is located approximately four miles northeast of the proposed carbon sequestration site in Ector County, Texas. Stratos is Occidentals flagship DAC hub, which is built by its subsidiary 1PointFive. The first stage of construction, which includes site preparation and road work, has already begun and startup is expected in mid-2025. Once fully operational, STRATOS is expected to capture up to 500,000 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide per year.
Occidental has entered into an agreement with Origis Energy to provide zero-emission solar power for Stratos.
