Sweetwater Carbon Storage (SCS) HUB

The University of Wyoming in Laramie, Wyoming, is embarking on a commercial-scale carbon capture and storage (CCS) initiative that aims to capture and store a minimum of 50 million metric tons of anthropogenic carbon dioxide within the initial 30 years of operation. This project will involve capturing carbon emissions from two non-energy industry sources. Notably, it has the potential to provide permanent carbon sequestration services for the entire U.S. trona industry. The trona industry is crucial on a national scale, as it supplies 90% of the world's soda ash and stands as Wyoming's largest international export, following coal. Additionally, the initiative, known as the SCS Hub, will facilitate the scaling and commercialization of direct air capture technologies by hosting CarbonCapture Inc's Project Bison as a site and carbon sink.
